New episode of Brave New Worlds out now.

The industrial revolution saw Britain turn into the ‘workshop of the world’. Productivity and wealth soared for those with means. But this came at a very human cost, with many of the working class people that powered the revolution facing awful conditions, poor pay and a grim future. And with many lacking the ability to vote, there was little hope that they could actively change their circumstances.

But in the 1830s a huge working class protest movement took over Britain - the Chartist movement. The fight for a better, more fair Britain was on.

From that movement, a new and intriguing idea for how the working class could live and engage in democracy was born. These were brick and mortar rural settlements, places like Snigs End, Charterville and O’Connorville.

I spoke to the brilliant Katrina Navickas about this really intriguing corner of history.

Katrina’s new book, Contested Commons: A History of Protest and Public Space in England is out in September. Please buy it. She’s a fountain of knowledge and was incredibly patient with my questions.
